We have written about this topic before not to long ago. But because we are experiencing high levels of vehicles and cars coming to the garage workshop having timing chain and timing belt problems, we thought it would be good to do a recap as it could save you money in the long run.
We have been seeing a large number of BMW and Peugeot vehicles needing timing chain and timing belt replacements or repairs. Here are photos of a recent Peugeot vehicle where we replaced the timing chain on the engine.
It is always recommended that after 40,000 miles clocked out on the road then you should get the timing chain or timing belt checked. If you do not and leave it then this can lead to damage on the chain or belt. A damaged timing chain or timing belt will likely snap and when they snap it can lead to engine damage.
If they do snap then as a result engine damage maybe caused, engine repairs and engine reconditioning can be costly. For example if the timing chain or timing belt snaps and the vehicle comes to a sudden halt then it can cause more serious damage to the engine, such as, the piston and crank shafts might bend and they will need replacing, the piston rings will bend. If any of these components are damaged then the engine will need to be stripped down and rebuilt from scratch.
Rebuilding engines takes time and your car or vehicle will be out of action for up to a week. Not to mention the large bill and costs involved in engine rebuilding. It would be better to spot the timing chain or timing belt problem and get it replaced or serviced, avoiding serious engine damage.
It would be better to replace the timing chain or timing belt costing from £250 rather than an engine rebuild or recondition which can cost up to £1500 or more.
Other symptoms of a timing chain or timing belt problem is when you are out on the road are you hearing large clunks coming from the engine area or large noises.
