There are very interesting developments taking place in Northern Ireland. Their transport department are bringing ahead a rule change regarding a vehicles MOT.

They are proposing vehicles will only need to go through its MOT once every two years instead of the normal once every twelve months.

Make what you will of this. Will this be good for motorists or bad for the safety of the road and pedestrians. We thought we would weigh in on the debate. Firstly, if a vehicle is to go through its MOT every two years there are a few things to consider, here are those points:

1) There could be underlying problems with your vehicle that could get worse over time, jeopardising the safety of the vehicle and the driver. An MOT check over 12 months can help ensure the vehicles safety instead of running into a serious problem 18 to 24 months down the line.

2) Not only can underlying issues get worse overtime when you find out that you have a problem in 24 months instead of 12, could these repairs become more costly to rectify. If you have found these faults 12 months sooner could repair costs have been cheaper rather than running the vehicle ragged for a further 12 months.

These are just a couple of points, and we are sure this debate will rumble on as these new checks and rules are implemented. Will the entire UK see these rules come into force we will have to wait and see.
