First what is a DSG gearbox. DSG stands for Direct Shift Gearbox and is a dual clutch automatic transmission designed to offer automatic gear changes. 1) A DSG gearbox will use two clutches to manage gears. Over time the clutches will wear out and need replacing. A sign of this is the vehicle will experience heavy vibrations and juddering.

2) If your vehicle keeps going into limp mode you could be experiencing a DSG malfunction because the mechatronics unit is failing. The mechatronics unit is the brain of your DSG gearbox as it is a pivotal component that manages your gear selection.

3) One thing we see a lot of hear at the garage are software issues. Software is used to help your DSG gearbox select gears. If the software is not updated or has become corrupt in anyway then the vehicle will be doing all kinds of erratic gear changes. When this happens it will be clearly noticeable.

4) One clear sign you have a fault is the DSG gearbox is slipping gears. This can be caused because of contaminated oil. Contaminated oil can lead to failure of the internal components of a DSG gearbox leading to all kinds of problems when selecting gears.

5) Sometimes the problems of DSG gearboxes can be very simple. DSG transmissions are governed by internal sensors, if those sensors become faulty then you could get a warning light come up on the dash.
