Firstly, what does DSG stand for? It stands for “Direct Shift Gearbox”. A DSG Gearbox is a dual clutch automatic transmission and has been produced by vehicle manufacturers to offer more fuel efficiency.

DSG Gearboxes are not the same as a standard automatic gearbox, they are different using two separate clutches. The two clutches allow gears to pre-select so that gear shifts can happen instantaneously, much faster than manual gearboxes.

DSG gearboxes offer more benefits than manual gearboxes, however, like any component on a vehicle, faults will occur from time to time. Common faults on DSG gearboxes are solenoid valve failures, the electric motor will fail, or one of the pumps will become faulty. If these faults are present, you will experience symptoms such as gears slipping, gears getting stuck and you may hear heavy grinding noises coming from underneath the vehicle.
