Most of the Mitsubishi range runs a timing chain. The important exception is the 2.5 diesel in the L200 and the Shogun Sport, which is belt driven, and those are working vehicles. When a belt fails on a pickup that earns its living, the repair bill is only part of what it costs you.
A planned cam belt on an L200 is a job you book for a quiet day. An unplanned one is a recovery from wherever it stopped, a wait for parts, valve damage to assess and a vehicle off the road while work is not getting done. For anyone running a pickup as a trade vehicle, that second scenario usually costs several times what the belt would have. It is the one job where booking early genuinely saves money rather than just being sensible.

At A1 Diagnostics in Cardiff, we provide professional Mitsubishi timing chain services, combining experienced technicians with advanced diagnostic equipment to investigate faults and carry out the appropriate repairs. Whether you have noticed an unusual engine rattle, poor running or a dashboard warning light, our team can assess the cause and determine whether your Mitsubishi's timing chain requires attention. We check associated components, including tensioners and guides, to establish the work needed. With careful installation and checks after the repair, we help restore correct engine timing and reliable performance. Contact A1 Diagnostics to arrange a timing chain assessment for your vehicle.
The checks differ depending on whether yours is the belt driven diesel or one of the chain engines:
• On the 2.5 diesel, a cam belt that is cracked, glazed or contaminated with oil
• An L200 or Shogun Sport with no belt record, particularly one that tows
• On the chain engines, a rattle on start up before oil pressure comes up
• Rattle or whine that follows engine speed
• Timing correlation codes stored on a scan
• Any oil leak dripping onto a belt, which will finish it well before its interval
Lets cut straight to the chase. You have found an award winning garage. Get in touch if you have any queries our team is ready to give you expert advice and are happy to help you with all your Mitsubishi timing chain needs.

The 2.5 DI-D diesel in the L200 and Shogun Sport runs a cam belt, also called a timing belt, on a published interval. It is an interference engine, so a snapped belt means valve damage rather than simply fitting a new belt and carrying on. The 3.2 DI-D in the larger Shogun is chain driven.
On the car side, the 2.0 and 2.4 petrols in the Outlander, ASX and Lancer are chain, as are the 1.8 and 2.2 diesels and the small MIVEC petrols in the Colt and Mirage. If you have a modern Mitsubishi car rather than a pickup, the odds are strongly that you do not need a cam belt at all.
A pickup that spends its life towing a plant trailer or running loaded is working its engine considerably harder than the mileage alone suggests. It does not change the published interval, but it does mean the interval is a limit rather than a target, and it makes leaving a belt an extra year on the basis that the truck seems fine a worse gamble than it would be on a car. If yours works for a living, we would treat the interval as the outside edge.
On the plug in hybrid the engine is chain driven, and it runs far less than the odometer implies if the car is charged regularly and used mainly around Cardiff. Two PHEVs showing the same mileage can have engines that have done very different amounts of actual work. When we assess one we look at the engine data rather than assuming the mileage tells the whole story.
Belt, tensioner and idlers as a kit, the water pump where the belt drives it, and the auxiliary belt if it has to come off anyway. Timing set with the correct locking tools, the engine turned over by hand before it is started, and a road test afterwards. Date and mileage recorded in the book, which matters more than usual on a vehicle that may be sold on within a fleet.
On the chain engines we replace chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets as a set rather than fitting a chain against worn parts.
We confirm the engine before quoting. If the vehicle is working, tell us when you need it back and we will plan the work around that rather than leaving you guessing. Check the service record under cam belt, cambelt and timing belt, since it gets written all three ways, and if there is nothing there on a 2.5 diesel, that is the one to act on.
