BMW gives you a countdown before it stops you. Once the remaining range hits zero the engine will not restart until the fault is repaired and the system reset properly. If your iDrive is showing a distance to no-restart, that is the number to tell us when you ring. The mistake we see most often is topping the tank up and expecting the warning to clear. If the system has logged a real fault, adding AdBlue changes nothing at all and the countdown carries on running.

On the B47 and B57 diesels, and the Euro 6 N47 and N57 before them, the failures concentrate in a few places. The SCR metering or injection module. The NOx sensors upstream and downstream of the catalyst, which are the most common single failure by some distance. The tank heater, which announces itself in the first cold week of winter because AdBlue freezes at around minus eleven. The delivery module and level sensor. And crystallisation around the injector, a white powdery deposit that is usually the first visible sign.
Here is where BMW differs from most makes: it stores its own fault codes rather than only generic ones. A basic scanner might return a vague P-code, while BMW-level software gives a specific code such as 2D2A or 2D06 that names the circuit precisely. That difference is often the difference between fixing it once and replacing parts hopefully.
We read the car with BMW-level equipment rather than a generic scanner, then check live data from both NOx sensors, dosing quantity and pressure, the heater circuit and the AdBlue quality reading. A downstream sensor reporting poor efficiency is frequently telling the truth about a dosing fault further upstream, and replacing that sensor would waste your money.
Once the repair is done we reset the system and clear the countdown properly, then run the car to confirm dosing is actually working before it goes back to you. If the repair is not worth doing on the car, we will say so before starting rather than halfway through.

One thing we will not do is delete or emulate the AdBlue system. It is an MOT failure and it is not legal on a road car, so anyone offering it is selling you a future problem. What we will do is repair it properly. If your BMW is counting down, ring us on 02920 220 380 with the remaining range and we will tell you how urgent it is.
