Land Rover and Range Rover Timing Belt and Timing Chain Replacement in Cardiff

If you own a TDV6 Discovery or Range Rover Sport, there is something you need to know: it has a cam belt, also called a timing belt, and that belt is at the back of the engine. Not the front. Getting to it means the engine or the gearbox comes out. Plenty of owners have no idea their diesel has a belt at all, right up until it fails.

TDV6 belts and Ingenium chains

The 2.7 and 3.0 TDV6 fitted to the Discovery 3 and 4 and the Range Rover Sport drives its belts from the gearbox end, and there is a second belt in there driving the high pressure fuel pump. The newer Ingenium 2.0 uses a chain instead, and early units are known for chain and tensioner wear. Here is what to look and listen for:

• A TDV6 with no cam belt, cambelt or timing belt entry anywhere in the service history
• Rattle or whine from the gearbox end of the engine on a cold start
• On an Ingenium, chain noise that comes and goes with oil temperature
• Rough running, misfires, or timing correlation codes stored on a scan
• Metal debris in the oil filter, which on a chain engine is a serious warning

Land Rover publishes an interval for the TDV6 belts, and it is one of the jobs most commonly skipped by previous owners because the labour is significant and the belt is out of sight. Skipping it does not make the belt last longer.

Because the access is the same either way, we do the belts, tensioners, idlers and the fuel pump belt together while the engine is apart. Doing half the job means paying the labour twice.

On the Ingenium engines the story is different again. Those run a chain, and the failures we see cluster on early units and on cars with a stretched oil service history. We replace Ingenium timing chains here regularly.

If a TDV6 belt lets go, the valves and pistons meet. That is not a repair, it is an engine. It is the single strongest argument for treating the published interval as a hard deadline rather than a suggestion.

Oil leaks are the other belt killer on these engines. Any leak dripping onto a belt will shorten its life dramatically, so we check for that at the same time rather than fitting a new belt into a dirty engine bay.

What the TDV6 timing belt job includes

Both camshaft belts, the fuel pump belt, all tensioners and idlers, and a proper inspection of the oil pump drive while everything is accessible. We also check for leaks that would ruin a new belt before it has done any miles.

Ingenium chain replacement

We replace the chain, guides, tensioner and sprockets as a set on the Ingenium engines, and we check the oil service history with you, because chain wear on these is driven by oil condition more than by mileage.

What it costs
