If your Mercedes is counting down to no restart, that is the message to act on. Mercedes does not simply warn you about AdBlue, it tells you how many starts you have left, and when that reaches zero the engine will not fire again until the fault is cleared properly. The single most common misunderstanding we see: topping the tank up does not clear a fault. If the system has logged a genuine failure, adding AdBlue changes nothing and the countdown carries on. It has to be diagnosed and reset.

On the OM651 and OM654 diesels found across the C-Class, E-Class, Sprinter, Vito and GLC, the faults cluster in a handful of places. The AdBlue delivery pump. The NOx sensors, upstream and downstream, which are the most frequent single failure. The tank heater, which shows itself in the first cold snap of winter because AdBlue freezes at around minus eleven. The quality sensor. And crystallisation around the metering injector, which looks like a white powdery deposit and is the leak people usually spot first.
Typical codes we read on these cars include P20E8 for AdBlue pressure, P229F on the NOx sensor circuit and P20EE where the SCR catalyst is not reaching its required efficiency. The code narrows it down, but it does not name the failed part on its own, which is why the diagnosis matters more than the code reader.
We diagnose the whole system rather than replacing the part the code happens to mention. That means live data from both NOx sensors, dosing quantity and pressure readings, the heater circuit, and the AdBlue quality reading. A downstream NOx sensor reporting poor efficiency is often telling the truth about a dosing problem further upstream, and swapping that sensor wastes your money.
Once the fault is repaired we reset the system and clear the countdown properly with Mercedes-level equipment, then run the car to confirm dosing is working before it leaves. We will also tell you honestly if the repair is not worth it on the car, rather than starting work and finding out halfway through.

One thing we will not do is delete or emulate the AdBlue system. It is an MOT failure and it is not legal on a road car, so anyone offering it is selling you a problem. What we will do is repair it properly so it stops being one. If your Mercedes is showing a start countdown, ring us on 02920 220 380 and tell us the number showing, because that tells us how much time we have.
