A wet belt is a cam belt that runs inside the engine, submerged in the oil, rather than behind a cover on the outside. Peugeot fits them to the 1.2 PureTech petrol and to several of the diesels. Understanding why that one design decision causes so much trouble is worth a few minutes, because it changes what you should be watching for and when you should act. Wet belt replacement starts from £750 plus VAT.
A conventional cam belt lives in fresh air and wears mechanically. You can look at it, see cracking or glazing, and judge it. A wet belt sits in hot engine oil for its entire life, and oil attacks the rubber compound chemically. It softens and degrades from the outside in, and as it does it sheds fine material into the oil.
That shed material is the actual problem, and it is why a wet belt failure is not like a normal belt failure. The debris circulates with the oil and collects in the sump, where it can block the oil pickup strainer. Once the pickup is blocked the pump cannot draw oil properly, and an engine starved of oil does not last long. Owners often describe the sequence as the engine failing suddenly, but the belt had usually been breaking down quietly for a long time before that.
This is why we treat a wet belt job as an oil system job rather than a belt change. Fitting a fresh belt on top of a sump full of the old one solves nothing.

The 1.2 PureTech petrol is the main one, fitted across the 108, 208, 2008, 308, 3008, 5008 and 508, and to the Partner and Rifter vans. The 1.5 BlueHDi diesel also uses a wet belt. The same engines appear under Citroen, DS and, since 2019, Vauxhall badges, so this is not really a Peugeot issue so much as a group one.
Because the belt is degraded by the oil it sits in, the condition and specification of that oil directly affects how long the belt survives. An engine run on the correct specification oil, changed on time, gives its belt the easiest life available. An engine on extended intervals, or topped up with whatever was on the shelf, does not. If you own one of these, using the right oil and changing it more often than the minimum is the single most useful thing you can do, and it costs very little.
The replacement interval for these engines has been revised since the cars were first sold, which means a Peugeot serviced faithfully to its original schedule can be overdue while its owner believes it is completely up to date. A full service history is not the same thing as a belt that has been changed. If you do not have a specific record of the wet belt being replaced, assume it has not been.
Bring it in sooner rather than later if the oil level has been dropping, if the oil light has flickered even briefly, or if the engine has become rattly on start up. Those are signs the process is already under way.

A routine wet belt replacement starts from £750 plus VAT. What moves it beyond that is what we find when the engine is open. If the old belt has already started shedding, the sump and oil pickup need cleaning or replacing, and where debris has gone further the job grows again. We inspect before committing to a figure, and if we find something that changes the number you hear it from us at that point rather than at the end.
The same engine is fitted across the group, so if you are researching this for another car we cover it too. See Citroen wet belt replacement and Vauxhall wet belt replacement.
