Most of the SEATs that come through our Cardiff workshop are on their second or third owner. Ibizas and Leons hold their value as sensible used buys, which means they change hands often, and the cam belt is the single item most likely to be overdue and least likely to be written down anywhere. If you have just bought one, this is the first thing worth settling.
A missing belt record is not evidence the job was done and simply not logged. Treat it as evidence it was never done. A belt is invisible from the driving seat, gives almost no warning, and the car will drive perfectly right up until the moment it does not. Paying for a belt you did not strictly need is an annoyance. Finding out the hard way on a 1.6 TDI costs you the engine.
Belt engines and chain engines fail in completely different ways, so the first job is establishing which one you have:
• A short rattle on start up before oil pressure comes up, typical of a worn chain tensioner
• Rattle that gets louder when you blip the throttle in neutral
• Misfire or timing correlation codes stored on a scan, often with no obvious noise at all
• On belt engines, a belt that is cracked, glazed or soaked in oil from a leaking seal
• A cam belt that has been on longer than the age limit even if the mileage is low
• A service history that jumps a few years with nothing recorded in between
Lets cut straight to the chase. You have found an award winning garage. Get in touch if you have any queries our team is ready to give you expert advice and are happy to help you with all your SEAT timing chain needs.

The 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesels in the Leon and Ibiza run a cam belt, also called a timing belt, on a published interval. They are interference engines, so a snapped belt is not a recovery and a new belt, it is bent valves and a stripped cylinder head. The 1.4 TDI three cylinder in the older Ibiza is a belt engine too.
The 1.0 TSI in the current Ibiza, Arona and Leon is also a belt, which surprises people who assume a small modern petrol must be chain driven. The 1.2 and 1.4 TSI engines in the Ibiza 6J and Leon 1P are the chain ones, and on those the tensioner is the component that gives trouble rather than the chain.
The 2.0 TSI in the Leon Cupra runs a chain, and chains are far more sensitive to oil than most owners realise. The oil is not just lubricating the chain, it is the hydraulic supply that keeps the tensioner loaded. Long service intervals, a car that spends its life on short cold trips, or oil that is overdue will all wear a chain faster than mileage alone suggests. If your Cupra is mapped or gets driven hard, that is a reason to have the chain looked at earlier than the book says, not later. We would rather inspect it and tell you it is fine than meet the car after it has jumped.
Belt, tensioner and idlers as a kit, the water pump where the belt drives it, and the auxiliary belt if it has to come off anyway. Timing is set with the proper locking tools, the engine is turned over by hand before it is ever started, and the car is road tested. We write the date and the mileage into the book, because the next owner deserves the record you did not get.
On the chain engines we replace the chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets together. Putting a new chain onto an old tensioner tends to bring the car back, so we do not offer it that way. If the chain has already skipped we check valve condition first and tell you what we find before going further, so nobody gets a surprise at the end.
The engine decides it, not the model name. An Ibiza can be a belt car or a chain car depending on which engine is under the bonnet, and those are two different jobs at two different prices. We confirm the engine code before quoting so the number we give you is the number you pay.
Check the book for cam belt, cambelt and timing belt, since garages write it whichever way they prefer and entries get missed. Bring it in either way and we will inspect the belt condition and tell you honestly where it stands. On a used Ibiza or Leon with gaps in the history that half hour is the cheapest money you will spend on the car.

We have been trading for over 20 years and have gained major accreditations with well known motor companies.
