Toyota has a reputation for not needing a cam belt, and for most of the range that reputation is earned. The petrol engines run chains. Where it goes wrong is the diesels, because some of those are belt driven, and owners who have been told for years that a Toyota does not have a belt are exactly the people who never get one changed.
Chains do last far longer than belts and most will see out the car. They are not immune. Chains stretch, guides wear and tensioners weaken, usually slowly and usually with a warning noise on cold start if somebody is listening for it. The useful difference is that a worn chain generally tells you it is unhappy before it fails, whereas a belt gives you nothing at all.

At A1 Diagnostics in Cardiff, we provide professional Toyota timing chain services, combining experienced technicians with advanced diagnostic equipment to investigate faults and carry out the appropriate repairs. Whether you have noticed an unusual engine rattle, poor running or a dashboard warning light, our team can assess the cause and determine whether your Toyota's timing chain requires attention. We check associated components, including tensioners and guides, to establish the work needed. With careful installation and checks after the repair, we help restore correct engine timing and reliable performance. Contact A1 Diagnostics to arrange a timing chain assessment for your vehicle.
If your Toyota develops a fault with its timing chain or cambelt, depending on the engine fitted, you may notice one or more of the following symptoms:
* Clunking sounds
* Loss of power
* Jerking while driving
* Large bangs coming from under the bonnet.
These are classic signs that you have a problem.
Lets cut straight to the chase. You have found an award winning garage. Get in touch if you have any queries our team is ready to give you expert advice and are happy to help you with all your Toyota timing chain needs.

The petrol engines are chain driven right across the range. The 1.0 in the Aygo and Yaris, the 1.33, the 1.8 in the Auris, Corolla and Avensis, and the 1.8 hybrid in the Prius and Auris are all chain. If you have a petrol Toyota and somebody has quoted you for a cam belt, come and talk to us before you pay it.
The diesels are the ones to check. The 1.4 D-4D fitted to the Yaris, Auris, Corolla and Verso runs a cam belt, also called a timing belt, on a published interval. The older 2.0 D-4D in the Avensis, RAV4 and Corolla is a belt engine as well. The later 2.2 D-4D in the Avensis, RAV4 and Verso went to a chain. Same badge on the boot, completely different job underneath.
Hybrid Toyotas are chain driven, but the engine in a hybrid lives a different life to a normal one. It starts and stops constantly rather than running continuously, which means far more cold starts and far more moments where the chain is loaded before oil pressure is fully up. It is not a reason to worry. It is a reason to keep the oil clean and changed on time, because on a chain engine the oil is doing the tensioner work as well as the lubricating.
On the belt diesels we fit belt, tensioner and idlers as a kit, plus the water pump where the belt drives it, and the auxiliary belt if it is coming off anyway. Timing is set with the correct tools, the engine is turned by hand before it is started, and the car is road tested. The date and mileage go in the book so the next person knows.
Where a chain does need doing we replace the chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets together rather than fitting a chain against worn parts. On the 2.2 D-4D we will also talk to you about oil condition and service history at the same time, because that engine is far happier on clean oil changed on schedule than on long life intervals.
It depends entirely on the engine, so we confirm the engine code before quoting rather than going by the model. On Toyota that check matters more than on most makes, because the answer is quite often that you do not need the job at all.
Bring it in and we will tell you, free of charge, before anything else is discussed. Check the service book under cam belt, cambelt and timing belt while you are at it, since garages write it three different ways. If you own a diesel Toyota and there is no entry anywhere, that is the one worth acting on.
