A recent Audi A3 visited our garage in Cardiff needing some sophisticated coding undertaken. Here is the car shown below in one of our ADAS bays.

The coding undertaken was to ensure the correct functioning of the car’s onboard ‘Side Assist’ technology. This is the technology used to warn drivers of other cars in proximity to them, particularly when they’re in a driver’s blind spot. You may know this as the flashing light in the wing mirror, or the beeped warnings when getting too close to a nearby vehicle. This safety software is extremely useful, but sometimes it needs to be specifically activated by the driver as it doesn’t always come automatically functioning.

This is particularly true of the Audi A3 range, which, in 2022, hit some supply issues and had to release a number of vehicles without this software due to a global shortage of parts. For many drivers, it has been important to retrofit the required parts and software so that they can utilise the functionality.

Our team of highly trained mechanics at A1 Diagnostics are able to install and code the Side Assist technology, which requires both mechanical and digital expertise. New LED mirror glass needs to be fitted to the wing mirrors, and wired through the bumpers into the car itself. Alongside this physical upgrade, OEM radar modules also need to be installed. These take the data from the mirrors and process it through the central computer system, providing the warning lights in the mirrors and – depending on the software and vehicle model – ‘rear cross traffic assist’, which engages the car’s breaks if traffic is detected when reversing from a parking space.

For this Audi A3, the work of our expert team was completed quickly and effectively, and the vehicle was fully updated and blindspots covered for the driver in no time.
