This week we have booked in gearbox after gearbox job at our garage workshop.

During this summer we have had a few hot spells, the high temperatures out there could be having an affect on your vehicle. In hot weather you need to ensure that your vehicle is serviced and check that all the necessary fluids needed in the vehicle are at the levels they should be.

The weather is certainly causing us to have an influx of vehicles having all kinds of vehicle gremlins, especially gearbox faults. The gearbox is an especially important part of the vehicle, without the gearbox the car does not work, it is essential, you probably already know this. But for the gearbox to work and run smoothly you must give your car the love and attention it deserves.

The gearboxes we have inspected currently have faults because they are drying out, they haven’t got the lubricant needed to change into a gear smoothly, the gearboxes and vehicle’s have to be well oiled for them to work well.

We have seen the teeth in the gearboxes erode and decay. Teeth in the gears that are worn out are not going to work well inside the gearbox and you will have all kinds of problems out on the road, one, your gearbox will be grinding and not changing gears efficiently, two, you will be slipping out of gears when you want to stay in a particular gear, these are signs you have a gearbox problem.

In the winter we always advise motorists to warm your vehicle up before going out on the road, for example, keeping the engine running on a freezing cold day. Well it is difficult to control temperature in a vehicle when it is very hot outside in the summer, this is why you should keep your coolants and oil levels topped up, so that engine components and gearboxes are well oiled and protected.

Simple precautions such as keeping fluid levels topped up can save you a lot of money. Look at all the gearbox components that needed maintenance work on the garage floor, this photo was taken just this morning.
