MOTs are a legal requirement in the UK, and here at A1 Diagnostics we offer standard MOTs starting from just £35. But what do you get for this fee? This was the question of one Volkswagen car owner who recently brought their vehicle in for its routine MOT. Read on to discover what checks we performed for their household car…
MOTs cover the basics of car maintenance and roadworthiness. Without these regular check-ups, people could be driving around in vehicles that are unsafe, posing a risk to themselves and other drivers. So getting an MOT check for your car – regardless of its make – is an important annual process.
In the case of this (Volkswagen pictured below), our team of expert mechanics conducted thorough checks on a number of crucial areas:

Wheels and tyres – starting from the ground up, we checked the tyre wear and tread depth. The depth needs to be a minimum of 1.6mm; if it’s any less, we legally have to replace the tyres to make sure they don’t get too much like something Lewis Hamilton would appreciate! We check their integrity, too – these days potholes can cause hidden damage that doesn’t cause a full puncture but can compromise the tyre’s integrity.
We also check the brake system, making sure the brake discs and pads are functioning optimally and haven’t reached an unacceptable level of wear. We check their efficiency and the condition of the pedals, too.
Working our way up, we check the overall body condition of the car. We make sure that doors fit and close properly, that the seatbelts are working, and that the car doesn’t have excessive corrosion that could compromise its safety. While we’re looking at the vehicle’s body, we also make sure that the visibility from inside the car is optimal. This includes checks on the windscreen, efficacy of the wipers, and the car’s mirrors.
Steering and suspension also feature on our list of checks, making sure that these connected functions are operating smoothly. We check things like shock absorbers and the condition of the suspension to make sure they’re working well and safely. A problem with one can have a knock-on effect on the other, so we check these two together.
Checking for leaks in the fuel system and the exhaust typically bring the inspection to a close, at which point we can give your vehicle its required MOT certificate.
