Everyone wants their car to ‘get them from A to B’, but along the way we all like a bit of entertainment! Tuning in the radio may be a thing of the past, but hooking up our phones and tuning into a podcast is often an important ritual for many drivers. So when our ‘infotainment systems’ go wrong, it’s an emergency!
At A1 Diagnostics we recently helped a Range Rover owner whose vehicle had lost power to its infotainment system. This also included the Climate Control functionality, which is no joke after the summer we’ve just had! So our team of expert mechanics set to work diagnosing the problem and resolving it for our customer. Here is the vehicle parked up in one of our vehicle bays.

The first place to start the investigation is the car’s fuse box. That’s right, cars have fuse boxes just like houses, and if a fuse blows it can have the same effect of shutting down systems or processes within the vehicle. Happily, however, this is an easy fix. If the infotainment system is suffering from a blown fuse, simply replacing it with a new fuse should resolve the infotainment problems immediately.
Another time-honoured solution is the highly technical ‘turn it off and on again’ approach! By disconnecting the car’s negative battery terminal for a short period of up to 30 mins, and reconnecting to a temporary module, it is possible to jump start the system and restore operations. A system reboot works on similar lines, and our mechanics can advise on this procedure, too.
More significant problems can be the underlying cause of infotainment system crashes. These are typically wiring or corrosion issues, including water seeping into the wiring or simply loose connections causing circuit breaks and power outages. These will require more skilled repairs, so our highly trained mechanics will get straight on the job.
Happily for this Range Rover owner the infotainment system issues were easily resolved, and the car was back on the road and busting out some tunes in no time!
