We can service your timing chain, cam belt or wet belt

If your Nissan develops a fault with its timing chain or cambelt, depending on the engine fitted, you may notice one or more of the following symptoms:

* Clunking sounds
* Loss of power
* Jerking while driving
* Large bangs coming from under the bonnet.

These are classic signs that you have a problem.

Qashqai, Juke, Note and Micra

The 1.5 dCi fitted across the Qashqai, Juke, Note and Micra is a belt engine, shared with Renault, and it is an interference design. The 1.2 DIG-T in the Juke, Qashqai and Pulsar is a chain, and chain stretch on those is something we see regularly. Here is what to watch for:

• On a 1.2 DIG-T, a rattle on start-up that settles after a second or two
• A timing correlation or camshaft position code stored on a scan
• Rough running or a misfire that gets worse as the chain stretches
• On the dCi diesels, a belt that is cracked, glazed or oil contaminated
• No cam belt record anywhere near the published interval

The 1.5 dCi belt interval is a real deadline, not a guideline. It is an interference engine, so a snapped belt means valves meeting pistons and an engine rather than a belt to pay for.

On the 1.2 DIG-T, chain stretch tends to show as a short rattle from cold that disappears once oil pressure builds. Left alone it gets longer and louder, and eventually the timing slips.

Oil condition matters more on the chain engines than most owners expect. A car doing short urban journeys on extended service intervals wears a chain far faster than the mileage suggests.

If a dCi belt snaps you will usually get no warning at all, which is exactly why the interval is set on time as well as mileage. Belts age whether the car is driven or not.

Any oil leak dripping onto a cam belt will destroy it long before its interval. We check for that while we are in there rather than fitting a new belt and hoping.

Nissan and Renault share the dCi engines, so the same experience covers both. We see the Qashqai and Juke constantly from our Cardiff workshop.

What a dCi timing belt change includes

Belt, tensioner and idlers as a kit, plus the water pump where it is belt driven. The pump is cheap while the front of the engine is apart and expensive afterwards, so we would rather do it once.

1.2 DIG-T chain replacement

We replace the chain, guides, tensioner and sprockets together. Fitting a chain to worn guides is a false economy and the noise comes back.

What it costs

It depends on the engine and whether the water pump is being done at the same time. Call us with the registration and we will give you a proper figure rather than a range.

Service books write it as cam belt, cambelt or timing belt, so check for all three. If there is no entry in the service book, assume it has not been done. We can inspect belt condition and give you a straight answer before you commit.
