Here at A1 Diagnostics we want to support our customers with any vehicle issues, big or small. We recently had a Citroen C5 brought in to check over a problem with the windscreen washers not working. Here is the vehicle pictured below.

This may sound like a minor problem, but in a long, hot summer like the one we’re in now, being able to clean your windscreen reliably is a significant safety concern. This customer did the right thing to bring the car in so that we could use our expert diagnostics to address the problem.
We examined several possible root causes of this issue, starting with the most obvious: checking the washer fluid reservoir was full. It’s important not to overlook the basics when undertaking vehicle maintenance, and we’re not going to over-complicate the simple things. For drivers, it’s all too easy to underestimate how long ago you filled the washer reservoir, or how many times you’ve used it in the past few months.
When there’s plenty of fluid present but we’re still not able to get the washers working, we diagnose deeper. Washer fluid release is driven by an internal pump that sits at the bottom of the fluid tank. When you operate the fluid release inside the vehicle, the pump pushes washer fluid across your windscreen. However, this pump can fail, either because the pump itself is old, or because the fuse has blown. We check for both of these scenarios.
Further diagnostics are needed if we discover that the pump is operational but still no water appears when demanded. This can indicate issues between the reservoir and the windscreen, typically in the form of blocked outlet nozzles, split or twisted pipes, or a stuck diverter valve.
Our experienced mechanics quickly identified the problem for the Citroen C5 and it was restored to full working order ready for our satisfied customer to ‘wash and go’!
If you have any issues with washers, wipers or any other aspects of vehicle maintenance, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team.
