Seeing a warning light on the dashboard can fill you with dread: what does that mean? Is it serious? Is it expensive? Is my car going to be out of action for days?!
This was the experience of one of our clients recently, after the EML light on the dash of their Fiat Ducato came on. Here is the vehicle pictured below.

On top of this, the handbrake of the car had been pulling and was needing some attention. Fortunately they decided to bring the vehicle along to A1 Diagnostics for us to give it a good health check.
The first step was to diagnose the fault that was causing the EML light. Using our specialist diagnostic tools we can review any engine light notifications and quickly establish the cause. In the case of the Fiat Ducato, there were several options to eliminate: a blocked exhaust gas recirculation valve, a clogged diesel filter, or faulty oxygen sensors. It’s a fault that can cause a failed MOT so getting these lights checked early is a good plan.
Once the fault was established it didn’t take our expert mechanics long to do a quality, long-lasting repair. After this they turned their attention to the handbrake, which had been pulling and needed repair. First the cables were loosened, allowing enough slack to adjust the brakes. Next the brake shoes were adjusted. Fiat Ducatos use small brake shoes that sit inside the brake discs and are only used for parking. They don’t usually wear out, but do need to be manually adjusted to maintain the correct tension with the handbrake.
Once the brake shoes are sitting correctly, the cables were tightened and the necessary tension restored to give the right amount of ‘pull’ on the handbrake lever. The rear wheels spun freely when the handbrake was off, indicating a successful repair by our experienced mechanics.
If you’re having any problems with your handbrake, or notice any unexplained warning lights, come on down to A1 Diagnostics and we’ll give your vehicle a health check for you.
