For many drivers their car becomes a friend. They know its quirks, how it handles corners, when it likes to be in 3rd rather than 2nd gear, and just how quickly you can really pull away at a roundabout! For those of us whose vehicles are also their workhorses, it’s even more personal.

That’s why one of our customers recently opted to replace the engine on their Ford Transit van. Here is the vehicle pictured below having the engine replaced.

Not only can this often be a cheaper option than investing in a brand new van, it also ensures the longevity of that silent team member who gives so much and asks so little.

At A1 Diagnostics we offer a full engine replacement service conducted by highly-trained mechanics. And the process demands top-level skills: replacing an engine is a major intervention for the vehicle, as the steps below demonstrate…

We begin by disconnecting the original engine from the battery. The front of the van is also removed, giving more access to the engine area and facilitating an easier swap. Disconnection of the exhaust system, wiring harnesses and air intake happens next, with each being carefully labelled to make sure it’s correctly reinstalled on the new engine. We also drain the coolant and engine oil completely at this stage, preventing a messy scene later on!

Adjacent parts that are not part of the engine replacement are removed at this point, ready for integration with the new unit. These include gearbox and clutch, the starter motor, alternator, turbocharger and diesel injectors.

Finally the engine itself can be removed, using a specialist hoist to take the weight. The replacement engine is hoisted into place, and the steps above are then reversed to integrate the new engine into the chassis. Wires are reconnected, the exhaust reattached, all adjacent parts are put into place and the whole setup restored as new.

Once everything is in place, the fluids are reintroduced and comprehensive tests are conducted to make sure that the new unit is performing optimally and all connections have been correctly replaced. We check for any unusual noises or leaks, and only once we’re completely happy that everything is in top working order do we sign off on the replacement.
