Here at A1 Diagnostics, our team is frequently called upon to investigate and diagnose leaks. Have you ever driven away from your driveway or parking space and noticed a tell-tale patch on the ground where your car was standing? That often indicates a small leak which is best investigated early to avoid bigger issues (and bills!) later on.

That was the attitude taken by one of our recent customers who brought their Land Rover Discovery Sport into the garage for some diagnostic insights. The leak was either fuel or oil, so we set to work investigating both possibilities. Here is the vehicle pictured below at the garage.

Fuel leaks can be dangerous, so acting quickly is essential. Usually a smell of fuel will give a strong indication that the issue is here, and a visual check under the bonnet can sometimes show spots of fuel around the fuel lines to corroborate. A common cause for fuel leaks is the Discovery’s fuel rail end caps, which can be faulty or develop weaknesses that make it more possible for fuel to escape. Leaks discharging into the engine bay can cause fires, so it’s a good idea to get any fuel leak checked quickly by professionals like our team at A1 Diagnostics.

Oil leaks are less dangerous but more messy! Locating the source of an oil leak is made more difficult by the spread of oil under the car, so our mechanics will clean this down to help pinpoint the source. Power Transfer Units (PTU) are common culprits, as are timing chain covers and engine sumps. These components all have differing amounts of oil in and around them, and leaks can have different consequences in each case. For PTUs, there is minimal oil within the unit but any losses can make the gears dry and cause expensive damage to the drivetrain.

Timing chain covers have a seal around them that can wear out over time. If this seal is breached, the timing belt within can be damaged by leaking oil. The engine sump is, as its name suggests, a store for oil at the bottom of the engine. Leaks here can be caused by something as simple as a worn-out washer!
