The timing chain, timing belt and cam belt are a crucial part of your Volkswagen engine. If these components fail your Volkswagen car or Volkswagen vehicle will come to a grinding halt. Sudden engine stops when the timing chain, timing belt or cam belt fail can lead to expensive engine damage.

At A1 Diagnostics in Cardiff, we provide professional Volkswagen timing chain services, combining experienced technicians with advanced diagnostic equipment to investigate faults and carry out the appropriate repairs. Whether you have noticed an unusual engine rattle, poor running or a dashboard warning light, our team can assess the cause and determine whether your Volkswagen's timing chain requires attention. We check associated components, including tensioners and guides, to establish the work needed. With careful installation and checks after the repair, we help restore correct engine timing and reliable performance. Contact A1 Diagnostics to arrange a timing chain assessment for your vehicle.
When you are experiencing a problem with the vehicles Volkswagen timing chain, cam belt or wet belt you will likely be experiencing a number of symptoms from:
• A rattle on cold start, especially on a 1.4 TSI — that is the classic tensioner symptom
• Rough running, misfire codes, or a car that will not start after being parked up
• A cam belt that is cracked, glazed or contaminated with oil
• Any belt or chain noise that changes with engine speed
• A service history with no cam belt or timing belt record anywhere near the published interval
Lets cut straight to the chase. You have found an award winning garage. Get in touch if you have any queries our team is ready to give you expert advice and are happy to help you with all your Volkswagen timing chain needs.

The 1.4 TSI EA111 fitted to the Golf, Polo, Jetta and Scirocco between roughly 2006 and 2012 is the one to know about. Its timing chain tensioner can fail, and when it does the chain jumps and the engine is usually finished. A revised tensioner was released, but plenty of cars on the road were never updated.
If you own a 1.4 TSI of that era and it rattles for a second or two on cold start, do not wait. That noise is the tensioner letting the chain go slack, and the gap between a rattle and a destroyed engine can be very short.
The newer EA211 engines, which covers most 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 TSI cars from around 2012, went back to a cam belt, also called a timing belt. That surprises owners who assume a petrol TSI must be a chain. It has a published replacement interval and it does need doing.
The 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesels, the EA189 and later EA288, run a cam belt with a published interval that varies by engine and model year. These are interference engines: if the belt snaps, the valves and pistons meet and the repair bill is an engine.
Because the interval genuinely varies, we check yours against the vehicle rather than quoting a number off a chart. A car doing short cold runs or towing gets a harder life than the mileage suggests.
We work on Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and SEAT every week, and these engines are shared right across the group, so the same expertise covers all four.
We fit the belt, tensioner and idlers as a kit, and we strongly recommend doing the water pump at the same time on the engines where it is belt driven. The pump is cheap while everything is apart and expensive once it is back together.
On the EA111 we replace the chain, the revised tensioner and the guides together. Fitting a tensioner alone to a chain that has already been running slack is not a repair we would put our name to.
The price depends on the engine, and on whether the water pump and thermostat housing are being done at the same time. Call us with the registration and we will give you a proper figure rather than a range.
Service books write it as cam belt, cambelt or timing belt, so check for all three. If there is no record in the service history, assume it has not been done. We can inspect the belt condition and give you a straight answer before you commit to the work.

We have been trading for over 20 years and have gained major accreditations with well known motor companies.
Being approved by the TSI, the IMI, the RGI and the IGA should give you confidence that we are the turn to independent garage that can service your Volkswagen vehicles timing chain or wet belt.
We have fully qualified Volkswagen technicians certified by the IMI. This means if you have any timing chain or wet belt problem we can sort the issues out for you quickly at competitive rates.
