Here at A1 Diagnostics we recently had a case of a failed fan belt wrapping itself round the engine pulleys on a Lexus vehicle – a dangerous fault if not fixed immediately. Fortunately we had the right team for the job: with 75 years’ experience between our mechanics, this was a straightforward fix for our client. Here is the team working on the Lexus vehicle below.

Fan belts (also called Serpentine belts) play an important role in moving energy around the car engine, including coolant for the radiator (hence the name ‘fan’ belt), making sure the battery is charging as the car runs, and making sure that the power steering is fully supported. If you notice any changes to these features on your car – like the power steering drops out or the engine starts to overheat – make sure you get your fan belt checked soon.
In the case of this Lexus, our first priority was to remove all parts of the broken belt, carefully unwinding shredded rubber from the pulleys and looking for the root cause of the fault. Each pulley needed to be inspected once the old belt is removed – a faulty pulley could cause the same issues with a new belt in a short space of time. Each pulley was individually checked for spin freedom, as any sticking, wobbling or grinding can cause future problems.
Once all the pulleys are checked and working smoothly, we made a double check on the crankshaft seal, where small parts of the broken belt can get drawn in and cause damage to the front oil seal.
Finally we replaced the broken fan belt with the correct Lexus replacement part. Getting the right replacement fan belt is crucial for safety and efficacy, and it gives the best chance of a long-lasting repair for your vehicle.
If you’ve got any concerns about your fan belt, are hearing any squealing from the engine or notice issues with steering or engine temperature, get in touch with A1 Diagnostics and we’ll make sure you car is road-safe in no time.
