We have been incredibly busy here at our award winning independent garage. We have been replacing timing chains on engines and a whole load more of engine maintenance services. Last week we had a Mercedes vehicle in the garage having its solenoid replaced. Here is that vehicle pictured below.

We thought we would write an article and talk about what a solenoid is and what it does for the vehicle. So let’s get going. What is a vehicle solenoid? Putting it simply it is a component that helps the car perform mechanical actions using electricity. One example being, the solenoid is what helps a vehicle power up because it engages the starter motor to crank the engine. That is not just its only role. A solenoid can also regulate fuel flow, gear shifts and the flow of the air conditioning in vehicles.
What symptoms could you experience when you have a solenoid problem?
There are a number of signs that can indicate you have a solenoid problem. Some will be obvious. Here is a list:
• When you try and start your vehicle it will not start.
• There will be a continuous clicking noise and the engine will not start.
• Sometimes the engine will turn over but other times will remain dead.
The Solenoid doesn’t just help the vehicle start, it can also play a part in gear shifts. Signs you have a solenoid problem causing gear shift problems are:
• The vehicle hesitates to change gears, jerks or grinds.
• The vehicle can get stuck in gear and will not be able to select other gears.
These are common signs you have a solenoid problem and that it will probably need replacing.
